What does this time of year mean to me?
Often times the equinox is misunderstood. The equinox is the moment the sun crosses the Celestial equator – that imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s physical equator. This year it is today September 22nd. The exact time this happens is at 1:20 p.m. MDT. That’s the time zone we are in here in Idaho. At this instant of time the Earth’s axis is neither tilted away or towards the sun. that means that the sun rises and sets exactly east and west. This is where many mistakenly think that the length of day and night on this day are exactly the same as well. They are not. That will happen here sometime in October. I think the take away here is that nothing is truly equal but that the constants in life can be relied on. Life is always changing and evolving.
For me this is a profound time. When the seasons change so do we. Our bodies are controlled by the moon and stars and seasons. We are tracking them constantly, as they are tracking us. Before we notice the changes of the season’s colors with our eyes, our senses and our bodies are ticking out the energy of summer ending and fall beginning on a deep cellular level. It is also the time of harvest. Not just the harvest of the garden of food but the garden of our spiritual internal growth and experiences. It is a time to acknowledge our natural evolution of being. I like to take this time to contemplate this interaction. Our lives go through cycles of growth, harvest death and rebirth just as we see in nature around us.

I like to think of this time of year as a time to begin the clearing and composting of old ideas and using that energy to create fertile soil for new creativity and important visions and dreams for the future. Today could be the day for a tea ceremony to help in this process. It doesn’t really matter the time you sit and contemplate but that you do. However the energies today are perfect for this internal research of your inner being.
